Rachel's Killer Kitchen Tips

{my fabulous kitchen table full of clean onion, garlic, and ginger root}

What's with the oddly near awful photo of vinegar with something that looks like a dead monkey's paw you ask? Why, it's a killer kitchen tip of course! (And the monkey's paw is really ginger root for anyone who was truly worried.)

I'm not trying to take credit for an idea that wasn't mine but to be honest, I have the attention span of a gnat. Therefore, I don't remember anything beyond what I did 3 minutes ago and I read this idea way beyond 3 minutes ago. It might have even been more than 3 weeks ago. I can't remember. Seriously. But! I do remember the tip and did get around to trying it. And guess what? It works!

I love a good deal. There's nothing like the satisfaction of feeling like I just got the steal of the century. However, I'm too lazy to do all that crazy coupon clipping some people do who manage to pay a few coins for a basket of groceries worth a couple hundred $/£. But sometimes I will go crazy if I walk into a store and some of my favourite fruits are on a fabulous sale. I buy them up in quantities that are absurd because I love saving money.

Then I take them home, put them up, and go about my happy life.

And when I go to eat them, sometimes not even a day later, they've gone bad. ARGH!!! There goes all that money I saved. But, there's a way to prevent all that terrible waste. Wash your produce in a mix of distilled or apple cider vinegar and water. One part vinegar to every 10 parts water. It works like a charm because it kills all the mold spores that attack the produce and makes it spoil. And since the vinegar is so diluted, there's no worries about it spoiling the taste of anything. Now, if only I could figure something out to do the same for my bread.

If this was your magnificent idea/discovery, please leave the tar, feathers, and pitchforks alone. Just let me know and I'll happily give you credit for your magnificent money saving tip. But let's be honest, you only applied this idea to berries. I went full spectrum baby! And people, the amount of dirt that comes off these things is kind of ridiculous and a little bit icky. It gave me a new appreciation for cleaning produce that to be truthful, I was kind of lackadaisical about before.

What about you? Do you have any killer kitchen tips to save money you can share with us? Particularly bread tips? I hate throwing away partial loaves of bread. It eats at me. Save me from the bread mold and share, share, share!

xoxo

  4. My top kitchen tips :-

    Stop bread drying out by keeping it in a bucket of water.....

    BOIL an egg to perfection without costly egg timers by popping it into boiling water and driving away from your home at exactly 60mph. After three miles, phone your partner to take the egg out the pan.
    Please note this does not work if you live on your own.....

    CYCLISTS: Avoid getting a sore behind by simply placing a naan bread over your saddle. This will comfort your ride and when you return home, hey presto! A warm snack.

    Before attempting to remove stubborn stains from a garment, circle the soiled area with a permanent pen so that when you remove it from the washing machine you can check the stain has gone.

  5. I will definitely have to pass on the naan bread tip to my husband. He loves to cycle for his daily commute, he loves naan bread, and who couldn't use a cushier ride?

    AVOID over ordering milk by placing your fridge on the pavement just outside your gate. The milkman can then check your day-to-day requirement for himself.

  9. I totally WANT to try extreme couponing, but the thing is, I don't actually like any of the stuff that goes on sale. And oh man, I am taking notes on the tips that people are leaving. I have no tips. just eat things faster. :)
